Boycott the GAP!?!

Culture, Justice

Focus on the Family, an Evangelical Christian ministry, set up a website called, “Stand for Christmas.” On the website they rate retailers on how “Christmas Friendly” they are. Apparently what qualifies as, “Christmas Friendly” are stores that say “Merry Christmas” and that’s about it. If a store is not Christmas friendly, Focus on the Family asks people to boycott the story.

As I was looking through the website I noticed that the GAP got an 82% offensive rate. As I read through the comments, it seems that the biggest offense of the GAP was not that they didn’t say, “Merry Christmas” but that in one of their commercial they said, “Go Christmas, go Hanukkah, go Kwanzaa, go solstice. Do whatever you wannukkah and to all a cheery night.” This one:

I’m disappointed in Focus on the Family. I mean where was Focus on the Family when the GAP was accused of using child labor in production of their  clothing? Where was Focus on the Family when the GAP was charged with unethical practices? I mean if you’re going to pick a fight with someone make a fight worth fighting. What happened to defending the cause of the weak? You’re picking a fight with the GAP because they included other names along side Christmas?

As an evangelical Christian, I’m very disappointed by the example that FOTF is setting. We’re suppose to get mad when someone attacks Christmas, and all the while ignore justice? Sometimes we’re our own worst enemy.
